Teradata acquires Aster Data Systems for $263 million

March 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Ohio-based specialised data vendor Teradata has acquired Aster Data Systems, a data management and analysis software company, for US$263 million. In addition, the deal will lead to Teradata obtaining around US$21 million in cash which Aster Data is expecting to have on its balance sheet at closing.

Teradata has announced that it will purchase the remaining 89% stake of the California-based company, after it purchased an initial 11% at the end of 2010, with the deal expecting to be closed in the second quarter of the tear. Analysts expect that the deal will see Teradata bringing in a new level of customer behaviour analysis to their data warehouse appliance.

Aster Data's technology quickly gathers information from a cluster of servers that power a company's web-facing systems. Data, such as web logs and click systems, is stored in a database and analysed to better understand customer behaviour. Their customers include bookseller Barnes & Noble, social networking site LinkedIn and online gaming company Zynga.

The deal marks the second major acquisition made by Teradata this year. In January it completed a US$525 million purchase of Indiana-based cloud based marketing software firm Aprimo Inc.

Teradata is hoping that these recent acquisitions will help it increase its market share in the data warehouse market, which currently stands at 12%. Mike Koehler, president and chief executive of Teradata, said in a statement, "We are excited about the big data analytics market opportunity that Aster Data brings to Teradata. This, coupled with our recent integrated marketing management acquisition with Aprimo, and our increased investments into our core data warehouse business -- provide three best-in-class platforms to fuel future growth for Teradata."
