Broward Commissioner Proposes Extra Seconds at Lights, by Fort Lauderdale Personal Injury Attorney

March 2, 2011 - PRLog -- A Broward County Commissioner is set to propose an extra two seconds of wait time at red lights throughout Broward County. The proposal will be made at the Broward County Commission meeting on Tuesday, March 1st, 2011. The idea is that when the light facing one way at an intersection turns from green to red, the light facing the other way will remain red for an extra two seconds. That way, all lights at an intersection will be red for a two second period. The purpose of this is to try to clear intersections of drivers running red lights before new drivers enter.

The proposal was made as an alternative to Broward's new red light cameras. Companies installing the cameras are seeking to connect the cameras to Broward's signal light wiring. Apparently this will improve the system's accuracy. It will also, however, allow cities to expand their camera programs - and it is this that opponents of the red light cameras are worried about. The proposal for two extra seconds of red light is being made as an alternative.

The proposal might decrease the total number of accidents in Broward's intersections, but of course accidents will still happen.
