This quest begins in Africa, where the perfect conditions for growing cotton can be found in Benin, Senegal, Zimbabwe and Ghana. PRPS cotton is personally selected and inspected by local farmers before being shipped to Japan, home to the world’s finest artisan denim manufacturers. The Japanese are the most skilled denim workers in the world. Each pair of jeans is woven on a vintage loom, and the finish and washing process is all done in Japan. When all is said and done, the process is at least five times as costly. To give the fabrics the right worn look sandblasting is used. Stonewashed jeans are jeans that have been treated to produce a faded, worn appearance. This is usually accomplished either by washing the jeans with pumice in a rotating drum, or also by using chemicals to create the appearance without the use of a rotating drum. Stonewashed jeans were a popular fashion trend in the 1970s.
