Feb. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia - Google has launched a new search algorithm that is likely to affect the ranking of many SMEs' websites.

The latest tweak from Google headquarters will lower the rankings of websites with little or no original content. It will also be able to more efficiently detect and reduce spam in the search results.

“Slightly over 2% of queries change in some way,” says Matt Cutts, Google's search engineer. “The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content, rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site’s content.”

This change will have consequences for small businesses with an online presence, says Roslyn Wong from specialist search engine optimisation firm, Premium SEO Solutions - http://www.premiumseosolutions.com.au/

“Search engines and the rankings are constantly evolving, so it's up to you to be one step ahead,” Wong says. “Uploading fresh and original content is important to maintain your ranking. This works in a number of ways. First and foremost, your customers and Google's search engine spiders always get to see something new.”

Wong suggests conducting a simple test if your site's ranking has inexplicably slipped. Copy part of a paragraph from a previously high-ranking page and paste it in Google search. If you don't top the results, Google may have mistakenly identified your original content as the duplicate.

“The quickest way to counter this problem is to change the content,” Wong says. “It's far too time- consuming, actually make that impossible, to have Google reconsider your site's originality. Just make sure that when you rewrite content, incorporate your targeted keywords and phrases.”

Wong says there could be any number of factors contributing to your site's rankings apart from Google's most recent update. These could include:

Trust and Authority of the Host Domain
External Links (Quality, Diversity and Quantity)
Fresh and Unique Content
Proper On Page Optimization with Proper Keyword Usage
Better Use of Social Media
