By: Dr. Russ Buss Each Friday for the next twelve weeks, I will write about the optimism to be learned in Jackie’s venture to become fit. Jackie is undertaking this journey not only to get fit, but to demonstrate how to approach such a task with optimism and the benefits thereof. As she works out and even makes commentary on her work-out, Jackie will be living her optimism, “on the sleeve” of her t-shirt, if you will. In the blog posts, I will be doing a more “academic” Lessons of Optimism to be Learned from Episode One of Jackie’s “Attitude is Everything” Journey 1. Ongoing honest, accurate and comprehensive self assessment is a core principle of optimism. Jackie’ • Her weight was considered normal for a female her height and age, but not necessarily where it needs to be for tip-top fitness. • Her percent of body fat was high at 30%. Normal for her age and height is 22-25%; lean is 18 to 22%; for highly trained athletes the body fat percentage is usually under 17 %. • Despite being a runner and dancer, Jackie’s lower body is much weaker than Trainer Jenn would like it to be. • Fitness testing indicated her posture, balance and flexibility were relative strengths at this point. 2. Optimism requires a “moment-to- • Immediately after the workout she states: “I feel like I might puke.” • The next day she describes how sore her muscles are. 3. She demonstrates positive “optimism stamina” when she takes a negative and makes it into a positive in an instant. • Feeling like “puking” is reframed as an indication of working out to a high, but not excessive limit. • She describes her muscle pain as a “good hurt,” and says “I enjoy waking up sore” - to her, these are positive signs of progress and mastering a challenge. 4. Optimists take risks. Jackie openly shared fitness weaknesses that were identified. In doing so she risks the possibility that others might have a less positive impression of her. In my opinion Jackie took the following risks: • She shared her percent of body fat despite it being a beginning point weakness. • She is allowing herself to be filmed “live” without retakes, in gym clothes while working up a sweat, as she goes through various workouts; no hiding behind the professional dress and retake possibilities of the OptimismToday.TV studio setting. • She shared other starting point weaknesses. 5. Trainer Jenn kept Jackie’s focus on the “task,” by describing and demonstrating the specifics of what to do as next steps for goal accomplishment including: • Warm-up activities • Lat pull downs • Various kinds of “squats” • Push-ups with weights • Overhead lifts Optimistic Stamina is maintained with a focus on the next step. Stay tuned for the “next steps” of Jackie’s journey to be seen in Episode Two of “Attitude it Everything” early next week on OptimismToday.TV.
