Botleigh Grange birthday for centurion PhyllisA Woolston resident celebrated turning 100 years old surrounded by family and friends and is also set to enjoy a special trip on the Orient Express.
Phyllis Ward celebrated the landmark with a party at the Legacy Botleigh Grange Hotel and Spa in Hedge End. Around 60 relatives and friends, including the Mayor of Southampton Cllr Carol Cunio, joined Phyllis at the Grange Road hotel. She said: "I'm really happy so many people could join me for what was a really lovely day." Phyllis, of Glen Road, has lived in Woolston all her life. Her first job, aged 16, was at Darley's Basket Makers in Spring Road and she later worked at Pirelli General Cable Factory then a Linen shop in Southampton. In 1937 she married Ted and they spent 57 happy years together. Her eldest daughter, Ann, travelled from Tunisia to celebrate the occasion and along with her sister Jenny, is treating her mother to a trip on the Orient Express. Jenny, who lives in Chandlers Ford, said: “My mum has always been a very determined and independent lady who enjoys life and living in her own home. "We celebrated her birthday at the Botleigh Grange Hotel a few years ago and my daughter Amanda also got married here so the family really enjoys coming back to the hotel. "It was a really nice day and as an extra treat we thought it would be a nice surprise to take our mum on the Orient Express as she has often talked about it." Phyllis also has four grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Patrick Cunningham, general manager of the Legacy Botleigh Grange Hotel added: "Phyllis is a really lovely lady and I'm delighted she enjoyed a special day with us at the hotel surrounded by so many friends and family."
