In 2009, Comscore reported that in Malaysia, social networking penetrates 84.7% of Malaysians, with people visiting a social networking site 22 times a month. That same year, Malaysian users also accounted for 30% of overall Facebook users, which constitutes 18% of the total population. There are about 16 million Internet users in Malaysia and IDC Research has projected Malaysian Internet users to reach 20.4 million by 2012.
