By: Maria Coder Remember the play Cyrano de Bergerac? Come on, you read it in high school. In true Cliffs Notes-fashion -- man likes woman but can’t muster the right words. His friend Cyrano comes to the rescue, hides in the bushes, and tells him what to say and the guy gets the girl. Well, bed and breakfasts are doing the same thing – kind of. Innkeepers aren’t standing outside with cue cards or anything but they are helping you plan that special moment. So if you’ve got shaky knees and could use a boost, you’ll want to think about enlisting some “assistants.” Jim and Joy Fisher of The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek in Duluth, Minnesota, worked behind-the-scenes to create a very special moment for a young couple who stayed at their inn a previous Valentine’s Day. After weeks of plotting, the groom-to-be took his unsuspecting girlfriend to a romantic dinner in a limousine. When they returned to their room, the innkeepers had spelled-out “Will You Marry Me?” with red rose petals on the bed, as planned. He’d called in asking for suggestions and a multi-day itinerary that incorporated various inns on the motorcycle route. Kathleen, who’s always thought a woman should experience ringing a bell and having someone come running, decided to tie the ring to the clapper of the bell so when his girlfriend picked up the bell, the ring would fall down. The next day, the guest slipped the ring to Kathleen upon arrival and she speedily put the plan in place. That evening when Kathleen heard the bell she’d forgotten about “the plan” and went racing up – she found a newly engaged couple. www.BnBFinder.com/ Cheryl Barber, innkeeper of the 10 Fitch Bed & Breakfast Inn in Auburn, New York, recalls a call from a young man who’d read about her proposal package and wanted to have a meeting to discuss the perfect proposal. He and Cheryl put together a two-night stay that included a dozen red roses, romantic in-suite dinner picnic, couples massage, cheese fondue for two, candlelight turn down service and a wedding planner book. The couple, now married, frequently visits the inn – always reserving the same room. Cheryl says she’s helped several men pop the question. www.BnBFinder.com/ Donna and Ken Arold, who own the Main Street Manor Bed and Breakfast in Flemington, New Jersey, are often sneaking around planning special moments, they’re known for their detailed itineraries. Donna says she receives many calls from male guests wanting restaurant recommendations, flowers, and love tokens arranged in advance. Her last scheme involved dinner, a massage and a wine tour. She also has a special elopement package. The inn would marry you on the spot, if it weren’t for that whole pesky marriage license requirement. www.BnBFinder.com/ The truth is, just about any innkeeper at any bed and breakfast will go out of their way to help you plan a proposal or a romantic moment; it’s what they do best. Most inns also have elopement packages, wedding packages and vow renewal packages. In theory, you could get engaged, marry and reaffirm your commitment in the same place over time. http://www.bnbfinder.com/?
