Jan. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- DENVER, CO. (January 25, 2011) – TEDxMileHigh announced today that Dr. Bernard Amadei, Founding President of Engineers Without Borders – USA, and professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado, will speak at TEDxMileHigh. The independently produced event, operated under license from TED, will take place on April 7, 2011 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, CO, and aims to elevate ideas and energize action.
Engineers Without Borders has grown to 12,000 members across 224 projects providing humanitarian aid in 43 countries and benefiting over 600,000 people.  Dr. Amadei's engineering principals are grounded in environmental, social and economically sustainable solutions to restore human dignity, peace and economic health to poor villages.  As a result of his efforts, Dr. Amadei is the 2007 co-recipient of the Heinz Award for the Environment as well as the recipient of the 2008 Engineering News-Record (ENR) Award of Excellence.
TEDxMileHigh is excited to have Dr. Amadei speak at this locally-organized event, which will showcase and promote innovation and inspired citizenship.  Dr. Amadei said of the event, “TEDxMileHigh has created an event and community through which participants and speakers will be able to explore the potential that each one of us has to be greater than ourselves through engagement and action driven by compassion.”  Through his organization and outreach efforts around the world, Professor Amadei is leaving a legacy for others to carry on his work.  His talented and dedicated network of academics, professionals and students is engaged in making sustainable changes that are profoundly improving the lives and fortunes of some of the world's poorest people.

About TEDx:

In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxMileHigh, where x = independently organized TED event. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

About TED:

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
