Global Offset Experts: U.S. Justice Department promises to get tough on CO2 rules this year.

The State Dept. has committed to defend the new legislation for the emission of greenhouse gasses, a top priority for the Obama administration in 2011, according to a senior official.

Jan. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- The United States’ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has instructed states to start issuing greenhouse gas permits which will allow emissions by the largest polluters such as oil refiners, fossil fuel-burning power plants and cement and glass manufacturers, a move which has caused a flurry of lawsuits, Global Offset Expert sources report.

"EPA's regulatory actions are of critical importance to the nation and defending against these challenges will remain one of our highest priorities in 2011," assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's environment and natural resources division, Ignacia Moreno, told Global Offset Experts recently.

A number of states including Texas have appealed for delays from federal courts but have so far been unsuccessful. Texas, currently the home of hundreds of plants that would fall under the legislation, argues that the new laws are likely to harm its economy.

According to earlier reports available to Global Offset Experts, the EPA in the latter part of 2009 declared that greenhouse gasses pose a significant threat to human health and that they were therefore allowed to begin implementing regulations to control emissions responsible for global warming.

Numerous lawsuits have since been brought against the agency, arguing that it did not carry out sufficient research to reach this conclusion, but EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has since informed Global Offset Experts that the agency drew from a vast amount of evidence from a wide variety of government agencies.

Some analysts feel that the continued success of the EPA will pave the way for a more concrete cap and trade policy by Obama’s embattled administration.
