Jan. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- A group of young people from Coventry have been recognised for making a big difference after taking to the small screen.

Students from Bablake School and King Henry VIII School received two grade B GCSE equivalents for successfully completing the Future Leaders Programme managed by Coventry-based training and digital delivery organisation, Progressive Educational Tools (PET).

As part of the course, year 11 students Sam Dale, Harpreet Chohan, Lois Mia-Davies, Nikolaus Elz and Gavan Jassi filmed and starred in a documentary about Coventry and acted as shopping channel presenters to encourage people to donate money to the housing and homelessness charity Shelter.

As well as helping to raise over £200 for charity, this programme teaches young people teamwork and leadership skills through tasks designed to recreate the world of work.

Neil Tooth, school area manager and lead trainer at PET, said: “The students really enjoy this vocational style of learning and it is great for them because it allows them to continue working towards their education during school holidays.

“It gives them the chance to recreate the world of enterprise, with its deadlines, challenges and focus on achieving a positive outcome with limited time and resources.

“For these students it’s all about the preparation for the world of work and for becoming leaders in their chosen field and we have already had 12 sign up for next year’s programme.

“It is fantastic to be able to raise money for such a good cause but it is also good because once the students have come through this course with the GCSE equivalents and positive references, it gives them that something extra that will really stand out on a CV.

“They really had fun coming up with ideas of what to do in front of the cameras and it certainly had the desired effect as even the quieter members of the group were driving a hard sell by the end.

“Don’t be surprised if you see one or two of them on the shopping channels soon!”

The five year 11 students on this level two course were joined by Bablake sixth-formers Alexandra Clarke and Frank Sackey who completed the same course the previous year.

Alexandra said: “I did my level two course last year and really enjoyed it so I decided to come back and be one of the first to try the level three this time round.

“As part of the level three programme we had a day of teaching the guys on the level two course. That was part of the reason I came back to do the next level because teaching is something I am interested in going into.

“I made a lot of new friends, it was really enjoyable and is an experience that I am sure will benefit me in the future.”
