Jan. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- The striking image of a monkey sitting atop a termite mound at the Jim Corbett National Park, and donning an expression that suggests he is posing for a portfolio, has bagged amateur photographer Sanjeev Bhor the Viewers Choice Award in Nature category of National Geography Photography contest 2010.

Recalling how the photo came about, 40-year-old Bhor, an assistant regional tourism officer by profession, and a photographer by instinct, says: "The image titled Smile Please' happened quite spontaneously. I was at the Jim Corbett National Park on the lookout for its most famous inhabitant -- the tiger. As luck would have it, suddenly we came across a monkey. Running ever so fast, within the fraction of a second, he seated himself on a termite mound. He sat in a manner that he was looking directly at me; quite as if he were telling me to click this photograph... that's how I got this remarkable and rare pose!"

Ecstatic at this distinction, Bhor says: "I am the only Indian to get this award in National Geography photography contest of 2010 . It is the most prestigious award in the world and every photographer's dream-come-true."

But that's not the only recognition that has come his way this year.

In August, Bhor was awarded an Honorable Mention for three images in Nature-Wildlife category in the International photography awards 2010 of Lucie foundation, Los Angeles. The 2010 International Photography Awards received nearly 15,000 submissions from 103 countries.

After that, Bhor also won the silver and bronze category in the International Aperture Awards 2010 of Australia. "I won 1 silver and 10 bronze for my images -- in the open and amateur categories. Both categories needed entries under two genres -- people & portrait; and science & nature."

While most of Bhor's pictures are on wildlife, he has also shot several interesting pictures at Kumbh Melas and pilgrimages.

Inspired by the visuals of wildlife and nature at politician-photographer Uddhav Thackeray's exhibition in Mumbai, Bhor first took to photography over a decade ago. "The visuals were so beautiful, they motivated me to take my interest in photography further," he says.

Some professional instruction, practise and plenty of interest have got him till here. It's a little difficult to dedicate time to this hobby. But I grab every little pocket of time that I can find, on weekends and holidays, etc," he says.

Also an active member of a photography club, Bhor and the other members -- Dnyanesh Hinge, Sushil Garje, Pravin Pawar, Manish Patel and Vipin Goje -- are working on a coffee table book of their collection of wildlife photographs. "All of us belong to different professions. While Hinge and Garje are sales tax officials, Pawar is a senior police officer. Similarly, Patel is a businessman and Goje a professional photographer busy with assorted engagements. Despite our busy schedule,we are diligently working on this book, which we hope to bring out soon," he says.
