A Gantt chart is a style of bar chart that displays an overview of a certain project's scope. It demonstrates elements of a project, such as start dates of certain tasks and the amount of work completed as of the current date. Users of Microsoft Office usually go to Excel when charts or graphs are required, due to its wide range of chart-making capabilities. Excel does not offer a Gantt chart in the default chart types, but with a little tweaking, making Gantt in Excel is a possibility.

Instructions:

  1. Start a new Microsoft Excel worksheet. In cell B1, input "Start Date". In cell C1, "Completed" should be entered. In cell D1, enter "Remaining". Type in the data you want in your chart under the correct headings, and the task names to the left. You now have your data for your Gantt chart.

  2. Using the mouse, select the cells by clicking on the first cell, then by dragging across them so that all the cells in your chart are selected. If you are using Excel 2007, click on the "Insert" tab, choose "Chart", then select "Bar". For users of Excel 2003 and earlier versions, choose "Chart Wizard" from the Standard toolbar, then choose "Bar". For all Excel versions, select "Stacked Bar" as the chart subtype. Click on "Finish". You now have a basic Gantt chart. Get Internet #1 - Time Management Chart Excel @ http://timecure01.webs.com and find out how you can Maximize Your Time!

  3. Double-click the colored area in the left pane of any bar. The "Format Data Series" box will appear. Click on "Patterns" and set "Border" and "Area" to "None". Click on "OK" to apply the changes you made. Notice the first color in the bars are gone.

  4. Double-click on "Category Axis" - the part where the tasks' names are listed down. Once you do this, the "Format Axis" dialog box will appear. Click "Scale", then choose "Categories In Reverse Order". Select the "Font" tab and change the font size to "8", then click "OK". The chart will appear somewhat flip-flopped.

  5. Double-click the "Value Axis". This is the white area where all the start dates appear. The "Format Axis" will appear. Click "Alignment" and change the orientation to 45 degrees. Select "Font" and change the font size to "8", then click OK. All these changes will now appear in the completed Gantt chart.
