Autism is a type of developmental disability that classically appears within the first three years of a child's life. People with autism experience the world differently from others. Children and adults with autism find it challenging to talk with others or express themselves with words so they need special help to communicate. Reactions to normal sounds of everyday life may be upsetting. Simple connections like a smile with happiness may be troublesome for a child with autism to identify. Words and meanings are challenging. Most people do not like a change in routine and appreciate a schedule. The biggest trouble for individuals with autism is making sense of the world. Everyday brain activities like interpreting sights, sounds and smells are challenging.

Autism affects about 1 in every 150 children with no known cause or cure. The human brain is complicated so difficulty exists in determining an exact cause although some scientists believe that autism or similar disorders run in the family. The brain holds over 100 billion neurons which when working together allow connections to be made. When discourse or the neurons don't develop properly or are damaged, difficulty arises for that individual to learn these connections. Racial, ethnic, lifestyle, educational levels, or social boundaries do not bind autism. This disorder affects any family as well as any child. The cases of children with autism are steady throughout the globe and autism is found to be more rampant in boys than in girls.

No cure for autism exists, but by working with a team of doctors, therapists and special teachers children with autism have a fighting chance to adjust or overcome the many difficulties before them. Autism is known as a spectrum disorder so many different levels of need exist and each case and child needs to be individually addressed. Since autism is a spectrum disorder people who have similar diagnosis can act in a different way from one another. For this reason establishing a diagnosis is crucial. Knowing the signs early can help benefit the child with an intervention program. Each person is an individual and people with autism are no different.

Many misconceptions and myths about autism are out there. Contrary to many beliefs, children with autism are able to make eye contact and can develop functional language and many children have some type of communication skills. Another myth is that since sensory stimulation is different in children with autism, that they are not able to show affection, this is not the case, many can and do give affection. Autism is not a condition that a child will out grow but in some cases symptoms lessened as the child received treatment and developed.
