It is quite logical that students with better reading skills will learn more easily and they will have a higher GPA. Among reading skills reading speed is vital for your studies. If you can read fast then it allows you to read more texts, which gives you an advantage over the others. In addition, if you are a fast reader then you are likely to have better concentration skills, which will allow you to comprehend better.

Besides reading skills, you have to use your time wisely for being successful in your studies. It is common that students under perform on exams because they were in time trouble before exams and could not prepare properly. The result is that they will cram before the exams, which is not the most efficient way for studying.

While that kind of linkages seem to be logical there has not been done much scientific research about these issues. And that is a reason why many people still do not believe that participating on speed reading or time management courses will improve their academic achievement. For example, some students think that speed reading will help them as it cannot be possible that you cannot read fast and comprehend well at the same time. Recently, there as been conducted a study by a group of scientists from Kerman University, who have investigated these issues. The posed a question. "How do study skills and habits affect academic performance?" They investigated the effect of many skills and habits on student performance and among them they considered the effect of reading speed and time management skills. They published their results in the Journal of Medicine Education.

Their sample consisted of 400 medical students from the same university. It included students for BA; MA and PhD programs. The results showed that the main weaknesses in students' study skills were poor scheduling and week time management skills. In addition, low concentration and poor not taking skills turn out to be wide-spread. The analysis of the effect of study skills on GPA proved that they are in clear correlation with it.

It was found that both time management skills and reading speed are positively linked with GPA. Students with best academic results pointed that good study skills were a major factor behind their success, while the students with low grades found that lack of these skills was the main cause of their failure.

Excellent skills for studying make learning process easier and more efficient. It will increase the students' interest on studies, which in turn increases the time spent on it. For example, students with higher reading speed will get less bored from reading and so they will spend more time on it.

The researchers state that study techniques should be taught to the freshmen at the university as it will lay basis for their academic success. They suggest that that at colleges there should be educational courses or workshops on these subjects.
