Saskatchewan's rich potash deposits were discovered through 1940s petroleum exploration drilling. The potash is found in the Prairie Formation, which lies at depths greater than 1000 meters beneath much of southern Saskatchewan. The potash reserves in Saskatchewan are massive. By conservative estimates, Saskatchewan could supply world demand at current levels for several hundred years.

The industry is one of the largest contributors to the Saskatchewan economy – providing 18% of nominal GDP.
