Basingstoke mum, Rebecca Hainsworth, launches a new ‘family social networking site’ where members can record pregnancy and baby milestones, write a family blog to keep relatives up-to-date on their news, upload photos and videos, sell baby-related items in the marketplace and submit reviews about the ‘sprog-friendliness’ of products and places.

“The main social networking sites are functional but not really fun or family-oriented.  Proud mums and dads want to share their baby’s first smiles, first words and first steps with their extended families and friends, who nowadays are spread not just across the UK, but across the world.  http://www.sprogblogs.com allows parents to do this in a quirky but secure way, maintaining strict privacy controls to give complete peace of mind”, says founder Rebecca Hainsworth.  Members can choose to keep some areas of their profile private, whilst sharing other areas just with family members, with family and friends or with all site members.  They can even grant ‘Edit’ or ‘View only’ access for an individual family member e.g. Grandma, who will receive an e-mail containing unique login details to allow her to add her own photos and videos to the family profile page, perfect for when the kids have spent the weekend with their grandparents.

Anyone can register for free to create their own personal family profile, with sub-profiles for each family member.  Users of the site can upgrade to a no-commitment subscription (paid either monthly, quarterly or annually and costing less than a monthly magazine), allowing storage of more photos, access to discounts and offers, reduced marketplace fees and the use of various special features on the site.  One of these is the ability to earn ‘Sprog Points’ in return for adding useful content to the site – users will earn a point each time they write a blog entry, ask a question in the forums or submit a review.  These points can then be used to list items in the marketplace, to upgrade an advert or to feature a special photo on the homepage.

Businesses can list their details in the directory, offer special discounts to members, broadcast news to their followers and write a company blog.  In addition, ‘Mumpreneurs’ can choose the ‘Premium plus business’ subscription, allowing them to create a family profile and a company profile page in one flexible account.

Previously a full-time HR Manager, Mrs Hainsworth came up with the idea for Sprog Blogs when her baby daughter started becoming more independent.  “I was struggling to find a reasonably-paid part-time job.  I wanted a new challenge that would allow me to spend a lot of time with my daughter and establishing my own business soon began to look like the best option.  It hasn’t been easy but I’ve learnt a lot along the way!” explains Hainsworth, who set up Rhainbow Innovations Ltd (the company that operates the website) earlier this year.  Many exciting new features are already planned for the site once the Sprog Blogs community begins to grow.
