Website should Cater for the Screen Resolution

Dec. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- We’ve all heard the bedtime story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This popular bedtime story about a little girl who wanders into the bear’s house and tries out their chairs, porridge, and beds, often comes along with the moral of respecting the privacy of others. As we discuss the topic of screen resolution, it is important to remember how Goldilocks experienced the Bear’s chairs.

A little background

Years ago, the default screen resolution of the internet and many computer screens is 800x600 pixels. This was back in the days when every computer came with a 13 or 15 inch monitor up until around 1999. As monitors have grown in size, so to has the average screen resolution. By 2006 half of the screens viewing websites had a resolution of 1024x768 but in recent years this figure has dropped as the popularity of monitors with even higher resolution has grown. Today statistics show us that 38% of all visitors to your website will be using a monitor that is 1280x960, 1600x1050 or even 1900x1200.

Back to the story of Goldilocks: she sat in the father bear’s chair and found it ‘too high’ following that she found the mother bear’s chair ‘too wide’. Finally she sat in the baby bear’s chair and found it ‘just right’. Just like Goldilocks, when you design your website you must make it ‘just right’ for your viewers. If I were to open your page and find it too tall (or long) or too wide, a message would be automatically sent to my brain that getting what I need from this website will take too much time and energy. For this reason many websites always build their site to be no wider than 750 pixels so that it would fit on an 800x600 resolution eliminating the need for side scrolling. Examples of this are PC Financial and TD Bank to financial websites which still feel it necessary to be accessible to users at that 800x600 size.

Generally today you can find almost every website is made for screens with 1024 pixel width and beyond. A common technique that many developers uses is to scale the page based on the resolution using images and text contained in tables that resize to 100% of the page no matter what the size.

Another problem that can arise when you are considering screen resolution is creating your site on a monitor that is too small. When I first began building websites, I was oblivious to the fact that my site looked silly on anything but my 1024x768 px laptop. When I loaded my site for fun on a 22 inch monitor one day, I was shocked how the sides and bottom looked – I could never see these aspects of my site because I couldn’t view the site at such a large resolution during the design phase – which lead to the purchase of a larger monitor so that I could verify these potential problems on my client’s web pages.
