Coventry school pupils Get Set for London 2012A Coventry school has become the first secondary school in the region to be accepted onto a special London 2012 network.
The Get Set Network is a special community of schools and colleges which demonstrate a commitment to the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic values of inspiration, determination, courage and equality. Pupils have led their own project at the school which has seen London 2012 notice boards erected throughout the school with one for each of the 12 subject areas. The students have then worked to complete projects linking each particular subject area to London 2012 with information about the projects posted on the relevant boards. Each notice board has two student ambassadors who are responsible for updating it and promoting the Olympic and Paralympic values within the school. In addition the school has produced a rewards system where pupils receive special coloured wrist bands when they have shown evidence of representing the values either through their work or actions. The school has also tied in some of the Olympic and Paralympic values with religious values held by the catholic school. Andy Savage, school sports co-ordinator at Cardinal Wiseman, said: “London 2012 is a massive one-off opportunity to engage youngsters and if we do not use this to inspire them we have missed a trick. “You only have to look at the effect the World Cup and The Ashes has on people to realise sport does inspire and with the excitement of the Olympics coming to Coventry when we host Olympic football we have a real chance to engage youngsters. “Projects like this also demonstrate the Olympics are not just about sport. People who are not hugely sporty can still engage with the Games and take something away from it.” To mark its achievement in being admitted to the Get Set Network, Cardinal Wiseman was presented with a commemorative plaque from Will Bastin, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership assistant for the 2012 Games. He said: “The work of the pupils at Cardinal Wiseman is a perfect example of how London 2012 can be linked into exciting and interesting educational projects that integrate the Olympic and Paralympic values into a schools ethos. “This project shows how students have used their own initiative to create an informative and interactive resource for their classmates to learn about and be part of London 2012 and thoroughly deserves its recognition as part of the Get Set Network.” Any school or college in the UK can become a member of the Get Set Network and receive rewards and recognition from London 2012.
