INFO: http://www.sfcmp.org, 415-278-9566 Ronald Bruce Smith’s Four Movements (for flute, clarinet, percussion, harp, violin and cello) each contain distinct musical structures: shimmering Waves, a doleful Caoidh (Lament), a playful Scherzo, and November, utilizing evocative extended techniques. Mr. Smith (b. 1961) teaches composition at Northeastern University in Boston. He studied with Tristan Murail at IRCAM in Paris, and earned his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been a visiting composer at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, and an artist-in-residence at Canada’s Banff Center for the Arts. The San Francisco Contemporary Music Players’ Contemporary Insights: Music and Conversation series is devoted to breaking down barriers between listeners and performers to enhance understanding and appreciation of new music. This piece will be performed on the following evening, February 28, at Herbst Theatre as part of the ensemble’s concert Tradition, Influence, Evolution. This concert is underwritten in part by: the Canada Council for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
