BBC’s gnome affairs correspondentBBC’s Geoff Foster is a well-known name in Coventry and Warwickshire sporting circles – now he is going to be a well gnome face as well this Christmas.
Coventry City has just distributed 10,000 of its Christmas gift brochures to supporters in time for the festive season and the booklet features the Coventry City garden gnome on the cover. But when the new brochure arrived at the Ricoh – it was noticed that the jolly little chap had an uncanny resemblance to the microphone wielding Foster. So now club officials have officially named the club gnome “Geoff” and presented Foster with one as keepsake. Justin Tose, Head of Retail at CCFC, said: “We went through all the design and proofing of the brochure, but it was only when the final copies arrived at the Ricoh that several people noticed that our gnome looked uncannily like Geoff. “But it is not only looks they have in common. The gnome – like Geoff of the BBC – has proved popular with fans, has a sunny disposition and always has a smile on his face.” Far from being insulted by the issue – Foster has taken it all in his diminutive stride. “In younger days I was likened to Cary Grant and Steve McQueen – something which I am sure will not surprise people – but I suppose my elfin-like figure, athletic pose and allegiance to the Sky Blues has drawn comparison with the City gnome. “I always knew deep down I was cover-boy material, and this has proved me right! “I have always loved covering the club but play a very small role in every day CCFC life, so while Jimmy Hill deserves his statue I am happy with an eight inch gnome.” Geoff and other Christmas gifts are also available at www.ccfcshop.co.uk and at the club’s stores at the Ricoh Arena and in the city centre.
