Ceo Alerts Motorists To 'Traffic School Scam'

GALLATIN, TN, NOVEMBER 22, 2010:  A local training organization alerted Tennessee motorists today to statewide 'Traffic School Scams.'

SPEEDING TICKETS MIGHT NOT BE DISMISSED

"Generally, if you have a clean driving record and then get a ticket for a minor traffic violation, a Traffic Court Judge may offer to dismiss the ticket if you attend an accredited Driver Education Course" Boyd explained.  "Driver Education Courses, or 'Traffic Schools' as some people call them, are regulated by the Tennessee Department of Safety.  We've found that many... many 'traffic schools' out there don't meet the standards to legally help a driver get a ticket dismissed in court.  Many times, these uncertified 'traffic schools' are even conducted by local municipalities and governments!"

According to State Codes, for a Driver Education Course to be accredited by the State of Tennessee, the curriculum must be approved by the Tennessee Department of Safety and the instructors certified by the American Automobile Association, the National Safety Council or another Department of Safety approved method.  Many organizations offer an online option as a means to fulfill the requirement to attend a traffic school.  The Tennessee Department of Safety has accredited none... none of these schools to meet the requirements for speeding ticket dismissal.

"You've got rogue 'schools' out there that will gladly take a driver's money and run him or her through a quick, worthless, uncertified training session" Boyd said.  "Then these 'schools' hand the driver a worthless 'certificate' to take back to Traffic Court.  A Traffic Court Judge can refuse these bogus certificates and refuse to dismiss the traffic ticket.  Not only is the driver out the money paid for the 'school,' but he or she is also on the hook to pay the original ticket while their insurance rates go up because of the points added to their driver's license!"
STATE GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO THE SITUATION
In response to this situation, the Tennessee Department of Safety began aggressive codes enforcement just this year on October 29th.

"The main idea is to drive safely and share the road... and to not get a ticket in the first place" Boyd added.  "But if you DO get a ticket and have to attend a Driver Training Course, it's best that you don't waste your time and money on one of these uncertified, unregulated 'Scam Schools.'  Check before you enroll!"
