Nov. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Stuart Ackerman, founder of Tutorgiant.com and the new Learn’Em Good educational book series, has developed a new way to help students improve their reading skills with classic novels.

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, 2009 reading scores from fourth and eighth grades remained stable. These scores failed to improve despite the financial support offered through various government initiatives, such as the No Child Left Behind Reading First Program.
According to Ackerman,

"I’ve always enjoyed reading the classics to my students.  My goals were to get the kids interested in reading and, at the same time, improve their reading comprehension skills.  So, I tried to think of a way for all students to simultaneously accomplish both. “

Ackerman, a certified school teacher with a Masters degree from New York State, came up with the idea of creating a series of classic novels with appended reading comprehension strategies.

“I used my knowledge to compile the most effective reading lessons and appended them to several classic novels.  I also included printable worksheets so that parents can print out some graphic organizers for their children to use while reading.”

Ackerman has included some titles such as: Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. Anne Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, and about 30 more.  The books are all sold online through Amazon.com.  Ackerman's video website, TutorGiant.com, contains over 40 reading comprehension videos with worksheets which compliment  the lessons in the books.

"As a teacher, I want students to experience quality literature, and at the same time, to learn how to read. My videos and books really complement one another. In the end, these resources should be extremely effective in helping students to improve their reading comprehension skills."

The Learn’Em Good book series is available through Amazon.com.   Stuart Ackerman gives educational tips on the radio, local and national television, and in the newspapers on a regular basis.
