Artist, Lenore Simon, still alive and well in San Diego.

Curator Carlotta Owens notified us that the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC had acquired one of Simon's pieces for their collection. She tactfully asked where and when Simon was born and if she was still alive.

Nov. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Lenore Simon walked into the store and asked me to frame one of her prints. While designing her frame, we got to talking in depth about art and artists. Lenore was obviously very knowledgeable and it was a joy to discuss both the technical and emotional components that combine to make a pleasing picture.

When Lenore came to pick up her framed art, she brought a number of prints and etchings to show me. I fell in love with a small picture of lilies that was done in various shades of greens and blues – and the fact that we had in a new molding that would be perfect for the piece added to my delight. She showed me some more of her prints. Much as it would have been great to buy them all, the walls in my home were already filled beyond what I’d recommend to my clients. However, I asked if I could take some of her art on consignment as her work is so expertly charming that it would be a talking point.

We became friendly and Lenore invited my wife and me to her studio. On a warm August evening a few years ago, my wife, her friend Sofia from San Francisco and I drove to Lenore’s studio. It was interesting to see a lot more of her pictures as well as her sculptures. There is no doubt in my mind that she could have been as successful at sculpting as she has been at printmaking if she had the time to pursue both careers.

One of my favorite pieces from that evening is a print entitled “Carnival”. It is a blue-toned print with black lines that captures the excitement of the carnival. The linear elements of the image are almost mathematically precise, yet the circular lines make the clarity seem effortless. This reflects how the consummate artist is able to make the picture appear almost easy, while being the result of much practice and a great deal of skill. Rather like the carnival folk who execute their movements with such precision for a few moments in front of an audience, while spending many hours perfecting their skills.

Earlier this year Curator Carlotta Owens e-mailed us that the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC had acquired one of Simon’s artist proof etchings for their collection. The piece in question is entitled “Circus” and is a companion piece of “Carnival”. Shows what good taste I have. Curator Owens wanted to find out some biographical information about Lenore Simon. She tactfully enquired where and when Simon was and if she was still alive. We were pleased to respond that artist Lenore Simon is alive and well in San Diego!
