By: pip cornall In 1975, Grace Gawler was a brilliant young vet nurse planning to study veterinary medicine had received a lucrative modelling offer, which would have paid her university fees. Concurrently, her casual boyfriend lost his leg to bone cancer. Grace chose to support Ian—a noble choice for a 21 year old but there was something more. She had an unshakeable faith that his cancer was curable. She directed her passion into his healing, dedicating 18-hour days—juicing, massages, and pain management, whilst researching every cure imaginable. Miraculously Ian survived, the word spread and together they established the famous Gawler Foundation, helping thousands of cancer patients gain hope and lead better lives. Four children later, Grace developed her own methods for helping women with breast cancer and authored her first book, Women of Silence. In 1994 Life was good. Disaster struck in 1997 after Ian unexpectedly left the family. A few days later, in total shock, she experienced a uterine prolapse. Repair surgery went wrong and her major health crisis began. Soon the healer/care giver for Ian and thousands of cancer patients was struggling for her life. It’s a travesty of justice that for 13 years Grace battled on with little support—she sold all she owned to pay for surgeries. She still had 3 children at home—one with special needs. A beautiful woman, her shining light was almost extinguished but her spirit would not give in. Horrendously ill, she faced death many times. All up she endured 20 serious surgeries but through her drive and extensive research, she became a world first bionic colon recipient. This required groundbreaking surgery in Holland, 2003, no mean feat when one realises Grace virtually had to convince the Dutch government to allow experimental surgery on a foreigner, breaking all sorts of red tape to make it happen. Fighting so hard for your life may have a purpose—perhaps there is justice in the world. Recently Grace was gifted a Health Promotion Charity in recognition of her life’s service to cancer patients. October 2010 sees the birth of the new Grace Gawler Institute for Integrated Cancer Solutions. With the institute, Grace will be able to touch the lives of large numbers of cancer patients once again.
