Nov. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- Your genetic inheritance plays an important role in how foods affect you. If you come from a family where the risk of diabetes and heart disease is high, you need to select lower glycemic index foods (foods that slowly convert to glucose) and fewer high glycemic ones, as well as less commercial meats and more fish and fowl.

Whole grains and beans are digested and enter the body more slowly so they have less of an impact on insulin secretion, which responds to the amount of sugars released from the starches and sweets you’ve eaten. Less insulin means a lower glycemic load and lower risk of diabetes.

The more insulin you secrete the more likely it is that your body’s insulin will lose its effectiveness. Harvard researchers have found that the risk of diabetes is two and a half times greater for women who eat the most sugar and refined starches such as white bread, pasta, and potatoes. In general, whole foods tend to be lower glycemic and processed foods higher glycemic.
