Oct. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Congo Square Theatre Company is pleased to announce that McKinley Johnson’s The Nativity, inspired Langston Hughes’ African American classic Black Nativity, and directed by Aaron Todd Douglas, will be coming to the Goodman Theatre.

In its eleventh year, Congo Square Theatre is poised to kick off their 2010-2011 season with what is becoming a time-honored holiday tradition for visitors and residents enjoying downtown Chicago and its ample offering of the arts.  The Nativity will run at the Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. This production will run December 3rd through December 31st 2010.

“The Congo Square Ensemble is excited to extend its legacy with a return to the Goodman with this family experience and celebration of the birth of Christ, as told through the tradition of dance and Gospel music,” offers director Aaron Todd Douglas.

The Nativity cast features Congo Ensemble member, Alexis J. Rogers, and will be choreographed by the Artistic Director of Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, Kevin Iega Jeff.  With music composed by Jaret Landon, the musical personifies the messages of family, unity and love through the traditions of African American heritage.

Target will sponsor its Saturday 2-for-1 Matinees to support the season's efforts, along with long-time sponsor Exelon. This 2010-2011 season is made possible through funding provided in part by The MacArthur Fund for the Arts and the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.  Congo Square’s 11th season promises to be among the best in Congo Square's history.

In addition to The Nativity, the 2010-2011 season includes Festival On The Square, an artistic festival in the spirit of the original Congo Square location in New Orleans: Art for Arts Sake.  Highlighting multicultural diversity, Festival on the Square will feature new voices in theater, music, dance and art.  Spring/Summer 2011 brings the world premiere of Brothers of the Dust, by Darren Canady. This new drama reveals what happens when the struggle for family legacy becomes entangled in the realities of infidelity, marriage and sexuality against a rural farmland landscape.  Both additions to the season will be presented at the The Chicago Center for Performing Arts, located at 777 N. Green in Chicago.
