According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical abuse by an intimate partner every year. Often veiled in the shadows of a month primarily focused on Breast Cancer awareness, domestic violence has taken a back seat until now. Local poet and writer, Donalja James, decided to bring the issue to the forefront by exposing her own hidden truth. Describing her situation she states, “There were times that I would recite a poem about women empowerment, and literally come home to physical abuse night after night.” Needing a way to escape, James began to write about her struggles in the form of a play thus “Why Me Lord?” was born. The play will showcase the struggles of two women, ironically a mother and daughter, fighting for survival as they deal with verbal and physical abuse from their spouses. It will also highlight the ongoing abuse in the church, as one of the abusive characters is portrayed as a renowned Bishop. The three day production will be dedicated to a former classmate of James, Melanie DeToma. While going through a heated divorce and custody battle, DeToma’s five year old son, Gary DeToma, Jr., was murdered by his own father this past summer. DeToma will be in attendance. The thought-provoking performances from “Why Me Lord?” will be life changing. James concluded by saying, “My desire is to show women they can make it out alive and healthy!” Tickets are $25 for general admission and $15 for students.
