Oct. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- The U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities has awarded Greenwood Clean Energy for its role as an innovator in advancing the use of woody biomass in domestic energy production.  Greenwood is a Bellevue, Wash. based company that manufactures next generation wood and biomass based heating appliances, such as furnaces.

Carlton Owen, president and CEO of the U.S. Endowment, stated, “Our goal is to develop and promote markets for low-value wood, further domestic energy production, and grow jobs in rural America while retaining healthy, working forests.”  Owen continued, “The strength of the Greenwood team and the innovative technology employed in their small-scale wood boiler advances all of these objectives and we are excited to be partnered with them.”

The Endowment, in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, selected six projects from a field of more than 70 applicants earlier this year. The competitive award enables selected companies and non-profit research institutions to bring projects into, or one-step closer to, commercialization.

When informed about the award, Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) offered her praise.  Cantwell is a strong proponent of, small business and energy security issues.

"Greenwood Clean Energy is leading the way in providing Americans with environmentally friendly and more affordable alternatives to heat our homes and businesses,” said Cantwell. "Investments like this one from the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities will help make a Washington state company part of America's promising clean energy future."

Greenwood is currently focused on promoting a line of wood-fired furnaces that burn wood to heat water for use in forced air or hydronic heating systems. The clean-burning systems emit minimal emissions and are up to 89-percent efficient, meaning that most of the heat released by burning wood is captured to heat a home. Because these appliances operate at such high efficiency, the furnaces also use 50 -percent less wood than other wood-burning furnaces. In addition to the environmental benefit, Greenwood wood and biomass central heating appliances can reduce overall heating costs by up to 70 percent, according to a study done by the Canadian government.
