Sewing: A frugal, fulfilling and fashionable way to outfit your young ones

CONCORD, CA, September 29, 2010¬– Frugality fueled the creative inspiration behind Mary Abreu's first book, Little Girls, Big Style: Sew a Boutique Wardrobe From 4 Easy Patterns. http://www.stashbooksblog.com/2010/09/introducing-little-girls-big-style/ Available November 2010 from Stash Books-an imprint of C&T Publishing http://www.ctpub.com/ , http://www.stashbooksblog.com/ 128pp, $25.95).  The metro Atlanta mom revisited an old hobby -- sewing -- when she left her newspaper job following the birth of her daughter. After a successful career as a reporter, Abreu decided to make the move from the newsroom to the sewing room. Before long, she was modifying and drafting sewing patterns to clothe her daughter -- and sharing the results on her popular blog, Confessions of a Craft Addict. http://confessionsofacraftaddict.com/

In this tough economy, Abreu has been able to save money by sewing clothes for her growing daughter and make money by discovering a passion for sewing she can share with others. She also uses sewing as a way to reconnect with her past. “ My mom sewed much of my clothing when I was a little girl. She died almost three years before her granddaughter was born, so that thread of love runs through my life and hopefully will one day inspire my daughter to sew for her family.”

Abreu has found inspiration and friendship in the sewing community that flourishes on the internet, bringing together home sewers from around the world. "Sewing and blogging gave me a creative outlet I missed from being in a newsroom every day, but it also was practical because I was making cute, trendy clothes for my girl," Abreu says.

She established some basic wardrobe pieces for her daughter -- skirt, pants, pull-over jumper and peasant top/dress -- and challenged herself to alter the patterns to create new options.
"That's really the root of Little Girls, Big Style: How can I take this pattern and change it so it looks like something different? It let me create a boutique wardrobe without creating a new pattern for every outfit, and that's a concept I think many moms, aunts and grandmothers can appreciate. I think my background as a writer, trainer and sewing instructor have given me insights into helping people assimilate information in a useful way,” says Abreu
