Employees of Your Time Publishing, LLC to Volunteer at Local Reading Program

Employees of Your Time Publishing, LLC will work with nonprofit group, STAIR, Start The Adventure In Reading during their 2010-2011 school year to support the second grade population of students which this program is designed to help.

Sept. 28, 2010 - PRLog -- The employees of Your Time Publishing, LLC are volunteering to tutor the children from New Orleans elementary school system.  Recommended by their teachers, STAIR students are 7-9 year old second graders. Nearly 70% are African-American boys and girls living below the poverty level in our community.  The first day of tutoring will be Oct. 9, 2010 at a local center where the employees from Your Time publishing, LLC will work one on one with a student in an effort to achieve the systems' goal of every child reading by the end of the second grade.  Your Time Publishing a local publishing house is an advocate for the children of America to become and remain the leaders of tomorrow. After reading “Waiting for Superman”, they knew something had to be done. Paula Tromp, Publisher said, “this is the opportunity she was looking for to serve her community.”

STAIR is a volunteer-based, non-profit children's literacy organization that provides reading tutors for public school second grade students. STAIR was founded in New Orleans in 1985.
During the 2010-2011 school year, STAIR is operating 29 tutoring sites serving 250 students from more than 30 public elementary schools in Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes. More than 300 volunteers participate in our program each year.

Over the last 25 years, STAIR's trained volunteers have tutored nearly 6,000 public school children who qualify for the program. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with second graders to improve their reading and language skills. These students are in danger of academic failure and need this extra help to succeed. Students and tutors meet after school Monday through Thursday or on Saturday morning at sites around Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes. STAIR depends on support from the community to provide this service at no cost to the student.

STAIR to Success: STAIR relies on testing scores furnished by its participating schools who test the children using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). The DIBELS measures were developed based on the essential early literacy components discussed in both the National Reading Panel (2000) and National Research Council (1998) reports to assess student development of phonological awareness, alphabetic understanding, and fluency with language. For the 2009-2010 school year, both fall and spring DIBELS test scores for each STAIR child were obtained from the schools to determine the success of our program.  On average STAIR students’ scores in Oral Reading Fluency increased nearly 92%!
