Benefits of Precise Flexo Press Web Tension Control with the Servo 3000

The Servo 3000 Digital Infeed + Re-register™ system by Rotary Technologies can be attached to a Flexo press, or any rotary press, without mechanical modification. Its servo system gives a standard press such precise web tension control that the press can print on a wide variety of substrates down to materials as thin as cellophane. This system improves performance on first run printing. In addition its combination of servo web tension control and precise re-registration allow a standard press to take on a much wider variety of work.

The Servo 3000 features a re-register system that allows a standard press to take work from another press, re-register the web, and print again at 0.0025” resolution at full press speed. This feature allows a press to double and even triple the number of colors it can print. It allows the press to efficiently print multilayer labels. The precise re-registration and web tension control afforded by the Servo 3000 allows a press to re-run a job to correct errors such as incorrect dates or other information.

The Servo 3000 eliminates the infeed gear train and the existing infeed/pacing cylinder. The Servo 3000 has a specially coated, servo driven pacing roller which feeds material into the Flexo press. Slippage is prevented by the combined positive traction of the roller plus gripper wheels that act as a nip. The servo mechanism reads an encoder signal from the press and modulates intake to follow the press.

Printers typically note better color resolution on their first pass printing with a Servo 3000 assisted press. That is on standard jobs. However, because of its re-registration capacity and excellent web tension control the Servo 3000 makes a standard flexo press more versatile and more profitable as well. A benefit of the Servo 3000’s precise web tension control and re-registration is that a standard press can be used to finish work from a digital press. Die cutting, stripping, and lamination of a set of digital press labels can be done and at speeds much faster than that of the digital press. This sort of job can be carried out between other print jobs, negating the need for a stand-alone machine that will sit idle when not doing finishing work.
