Jan. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- Digital printing is an excellent means of printing short runs of virtually any type of press job. The nature of a digital printing is that it does not have an extended or expensive setup cost. A digital press is very flexible and can, in fact, change text or design in mid run. For jobs that require a lot of different content on a label of the same size and shape, a digital press cannot be beaten. As in all printing the printer needs to be concerned about his profit margin. Any new equipment can be expensive and that is true of a digital press. A unique feature of buying a digital press is that the printer needs to find a finishing solution. Digital presses do not laminate, die cut, or strip their work. A printer who purchases a digital press and a stand alone finishing machine will need to find and accomplish enough profitable work to pay for both machines. A printer who already has a standard flexographic press has another solution available that will commonly help his digital printing profit margin. This solution is the Servo 3000 Digital Infeed + Re-register™ system made by Rotary Technologies. What follows is brief list of reasons why using a Servo 3000 upgraded flexographic press for doing digital press finishing may well improve the profit margin of the digital press.

Paying Less for Equipment

The cost of adding Servo 3000 to a standard flexographic press is comparable to the low end of costs for a stand alone finishing machine. A printer can add the Servo 3000 to a standard press and obtain servo functioning for a mere fraction of the cost of a new, high end servo press.

Having a Machine That Goes Back to Its Regular Job When Not Doing Finishing Work for a Digital Press

A greater cost savings in using an upgraded standard flexographic press for digital press finishing is that when the flexo press is not doing finishing work for a digital press it goes back to its usual work and is making money instead of just adding to overhead.

Being Able to Take on More Profitable Work like Printing Extended Content Labels

Digital printing is an ideal solution for printing extended content labels, especially if the text or design needed to be changed several times during the print run. The problem for a digital press taking on this kind of work is that a stand alone finishing machine is not designed to, and not able to, precisely finish multilayer labels. Because of the precise re-registration that the Servo 3000 affords a standard flexographic press the unit can re-register the work of a digital press. Then it can hold both the first layer and subsequent layers in the degree of registration necessary for precise finishing work. It should be noted that using a Servo 3000 press add on with a standard flexo press allows the operator to much more easily and precisely print and finish extended content labels, all on a flexo press. For a Servo 3000 assisted press the job of finishing work from a digital is just part of what it can do.

Deriving More Profit from the Upgraded Flexographic Press as Well

We noted above that when a flexo press upgraded with the Servo 3000 is not doing finishing work it is back at its other work. However, if the printer upgrades a standard flexographic press with the Servo 3000 he can take on more profitable work such as printing flexible printed circuits. The end result of using the Servo 3000 as a finishing solution could just be to improve the profit margin on the flexo press as well.

The bottom line is that the printer looking to use a digital press to do short runs of labels and other jobs will be able to improve his profit margin by upgrading a standard flexographic press with the Servo 3000 Digital Infeed + Re-register™ system made by Rotary Technologies. This solution will cost the same or less as a “stand alone” machine. It will allow the digital printer to take on more profitable work and it will allow the printer to reduce substrate loss, take on more profitable flexo jobs, and, typically, speed up print runs to boot.
