The Sounds of Desperation

People calling for help, water lapping into hospital stairwells, the National Guard patrolling hospitals; read how nurses survived Hurricane Katrina — the ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses next book discussion

Sept. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- A lasting impression after reading Nursing in the Storm: Voices from Hurricane Katrina by Denise Danna, DNS, RN, and Sandra E. Cordray, MA, MJ, is the description of sounds. The scraping sound of a rescue boat skimming over the tops of submerged cars in New Orleans immediately post-Katrina. The sounds of people begging for help and rescue as they cling to treetops! The sounds of hoodlums and thugs in the Superdome joy riding in the stadium’s golf carts, while so many are in need of food and water. And the absence of all sound, as hospital after hospital is evacuated and abandoned, many to never open again.

Nursing in the Storm tells the stories of 25 nurses who worked through the storm and the flooding in New Orleans. Join the discussion for the online ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses (http://nursing.advanceweb.com, scroll down to Calling All Book Worms) Sept. 1 and hear podcasted interviews with several of the nurses featured in the book. The discussion continues until Nov. 2, when the book group launches into the next read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot beginning Nov. 3.
