Many action figures are created specifically in limited runs intentionally for the purpose of creating a limited supply, leading to a higher value.  This collectors market has led to fast returns on items that collectors are able to identify and pre-order before they are available to the general public.  Mastering this market can allow a collector to buy the highest quality pieces and net the best returns if they wish to sell. For older toys, using guides, collectors can get an idea of which toys will gain the most value over time. Unanticipated successes, , can spawn highly desired toys that are very rare and hard to find.  Check your basement or attic – there could be a pot of gold in that old toy chest.
