Sept. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- SensoMotoric Instruments GmbH (SMI), the established leader in eye tracking solutions for refractive laser surgery, launches its Surgery Guidance Solution for IOLs in Europe at the annual congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons – ESCRS in Paris, September 2nd – 8th.  The SMI Surgery Guidance Solution allows surgeons to position perfectly cataract surgery steps as well as implants based on objective data of the eye without any use of manual marker.

The orientation of toric IOLs, the centration of multifocal IOLs, the positioning of incisions and LRIs, the centration and size of the capsulorhexis are challenges for the cataract surgeon and potential threats to refractive outcome.  So far these challenges have been tackled with different forms of manual markers.  SMI’s Surgery Guidance solution SG3000 provides automated visual guidance for the surgeon without manual markers.  Based on a preoperative reference image the SG3000 allows for automatic registration and control of the eye position under the surgical microscope.  The SG3000 software then allows the surgeon to step through the cataract procedure and provides the visual guidance with real-time tracking and precise overlays over the patient’s eye under the microscope. After extensive clinical work and fine tuning with high profile innovators in Europe and the USA, the SG 3000 is now ready for the market.

“Now, surgeons are able to position IOLs and incisions with the SMI Surgery Guidance technology automatically, consistently and accurately relative to the patient’s eye. By substituting manual markers, it simplifies the surgery workflow, increases confidence and ensures predictability.” says the medical innovator Dr. Rudy Nuijts, Director of Cornea Clinic University of Maastricht.  Dr. Oliver Kersting, Head of SMI’s Ophthalmic Systems business division adds: “With this solution SMI brings the benefits of robust and accurate eye registration and tracking to cataract surgery. We are proud to apply our extensive experience from the refractive surgery to a field, where accuracy and reliability becomes more important as premium lenses gain acceptance.”
