| Social Media Week Announces Initial Lineup of Events in Five CitiesOver 150 Events Scheduled Between September 20-24
By: Toby Daniels Teams in each city are pulling together programs which collectively consist of more than 150 free events (with many more planned), covering industry sectors ranging from politics, publishing, film, education, and music to topics such as the rise of location based services, social media monitoring and metrics and social graph optimization. This year the conference is supported by our global sponsor, the social platform Meebo, and some of the world's largest media companies, including the Financial Times, LA Times, Mashable, Fast Company, Sky TG24 (Italian Sky news), Fox Latin-America and El Tiempo (Columbia). The organizers are also excited to announce that they will be working with the US State Department on a very unique event that will be live streamed around the world, and which aims to celebrate US technology innovation. The Los Angeles team, led by city partner Erick Brownstein & The New Agency and with support from the City of Los Angeles and LA Weekly, are kicking off Social Media Week LA with a Global Opening Event at the Inner-City Arts campus, where they will be joined by Sir Ken Robinson and others to raise awareness and generate support for arts and learning. The week will round out with a terrific slate of events, which includes over seventy-five individual events across a wide variety of industries, including events with the Director’s Guild of America, City Hall, USC’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, a music event with LiveNation at the House of Blues, and a screening of Waiting for Superman with MTV and Paramount. “The depth and breadth of the dozens of events scheduled for the week is amazing,” says LA city partner Erick Brownstein. “However, this conference has a deeper purpose and will be a prototype demonstrating the power of social media to make a difference. By using the conference as a platform, from the opening press conference to the closing party on Friday night and every event in between, we will support arts, creativity and learning with our non-profit partner Inner-City Arts.” Milan city partner Marco Montemagno, Paola Lucciola and their Augmendy team have put together a spectacular week showcasing the best of Italy and Milan. Social Media Week Milan launches with over twenty-five confirmed events and many more in the pipeline. Events will be taking place all over Milan at locations like Frog Design, In Definizione, and Urban Center. Speakers include Naveen Selvadurai, co-founder of geolocation company Foursquare; Rand Fishkin, CEO of SEOmoz, world leading expert in search engine indexing; and Dina Kaplan, co-founder of the television network Blip.tv. Milan city partners Marco Antonio Masieri and Marco Montemagno add, “We believe Social Media Week Milan is a great opportunity to meet people interested in the innovative social media either in Italy and in Europe. It will be “the place to be” to learn how the web communication is changing habits, relationships, business and lifestyle in general. This event, in our country for the first time, is a great opportunity to observe the evolution of the Web 2.0 and how the new ‘web based’ devices are becoming an interesting growing market. According to sources, Italy has the highest smartphone penetration across Europe’s ranking. We are confident that Italy will see a new web-renaissance in the very near future, and also through Social Media Week, and – why not?” Thanks to the tireless efforts of Buenos Aires city partner María del Carmen Lara Dillon and the Socialatom team, run by leader Andres Barreto, Social Media Week Buenos Aires launches with over twenty events, and two dozen many more in the works. Events will be taking place at locations throughout Buenos Aires, including Universidad de Palermo, Ciudad Cultural Konex, and will feature the contributions of partner organizations Samsung . As the leader for all three Latin American Social Media Week city partners, Andres Barreto adds, "We are very excited to see this event happen in Latin America, as not only brands, but also educational institutions, media outlets, and entrepreneurs come together to share best practices that open up a wave of opportunities for the region as a whole.” Mexico City’s schedule contains nearly twenty events, ranging in topic from tourism, destination marketing and social responsibility, to education, government, journalism, technology and radio. Supported by media partnerships which include Mexican newspaper El Universal and independent radio Grupo ACIR, Social Media Week Mexico City will host events across a variety of venues; The Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education and Universidad Iberoamericana will host various conversations about social media, technology and education, while the Center for Philanthropy in Mexico will explore how new media impacts issues of health, social entrepreneurship and social responsibility. Rounding our the Latin American program, Bogotá will be focusing on creating points of connection and reflection among Colombian people and projects that rely on the shared experiences and mass collaboration of the Internet for the purpose of learning about social media as a force for creative initiatives in various fields. Topics such as the economy, culture, education, journalism, and advertising are the foundation of Social Media Week Bogotá, whose events include panels such as mobile and geolocation, with Saulo Passos of Nokia LatAm and Dan Loiza of Android User Group; Social Media for the music industry, with Solutions AR (Juanes, Ricky Martin, Universal) and the band Altered States; Future of Journalism and Social Media, with El Tiempo. The strength of Social Media Week lies in the collaborative efforts of the community.
