Sept. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- SAVAGE, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – The Lakeville and Savage, MN orthodontics practice of Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, is accepting candy donations again this year for its annual Halloween candy buy-back program.

This is the second year that Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth and Dr. Trudy Bonvino, the Savage, MN orthodontists at Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, have offered the program. It is held each October as a way of discouraging patients from eating Halloween candies that might be harmful to their orthodontic treatment, and encouraging them to donate the candy to American soldiers serving overseas.

“The buy-back program helps reduce the temptation for patients to eat sticky, chewy candies that can damage their braces,,” said Bonvino, a Lakeville and Savage orthodontist (http://www.cosmoortho.com/), who is a partner in Cosmopolitan orthodontics, which opened  in 2009. “It also gives them a chance to show our soldiers that we’re thinking of them.”

Candies including taffies, caramels and other chewy sweets can can break or bend wires, pull brackets off of teeth, and damage fixed retainers, said Bonvino, a Savage orthodontics provider (http://www.pressrelease365.com/pr/medical/dental/savage-o...).

Cosmopolitan employees aren’t left out of the fun. Each year, they predict how much candy will be donated by patients. Last year’s contest resulted in nearly 800 pounds of candy being collected from patients and sent to troops.

“Every year we hold this program, our patients are generous enough to give away candy that they actually could have kept for themselves because it was safe to eat with braces,”  Bonvino said. “Our patients are incredibly generous with their donations when they learn who gets the donated candy.”

Cosmopolitan’s patients look forward to the buyback program each year, and they are rewarded for their giving spirit. For each pound of candy a patient donates, he/she receives tokens that can be cashed in for items such as gift cards and toys.

Patients who want to donate during this year’s program may do so at either Cosmopolitan Orthodontics location on Nov. 1, between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Then it will be shipped- along with toothbrushes- to soldiers in Iraq.

“We wouldn’t feel right giving them candy and missing out on an opportunity to promote good oral health,” said Bonvino, a Savage Invisalign, expert. “We like to share the message that it’s OK to have candy, but it’s important to brush after eating sugary sweets, especially if they are chewy, because those tend to stick to your teeth longer.”
