Family Caregivers Will Sail Into Calming Seas on a Caribbean Cruise Designed Just for Them

Gary Barg, Editor-In-Chief of Today’s Caregiver magazine and Caregiver.com, who will keynote and moderate family caregiver sessions throughout the cruise, recounts his own positive experience with the healing benefits of cruises for caregivers:  

“My dad retired in 1990 and immediately developed multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer). The next two years were a dizzying nightmare of illness, doctor and dialysis center visits, and medical emergencies for him and my mom. Not an unfamiliar story to most family caregivers.

A few months after Dad passed away, I convinced Mom to go on a short cruise out of Miami, Florida to help her get some much needed respite.  After the first day or so, I saw something that I had not seen on Mom’s face for almost two years—the slightest hint of a smile.  I don’t remember what caused it, but I do know it had everything to do with getting out on the open seas for a few days.  I also know that a trip like this would have done a world of good for her if she had been able to take it while caregiving for Dad.”

The trip occurred a few years before Barg launched Today’s Caregiver magazine, Caregiver.com and the first Fearless Caregiver Conference. In fact, in the past fifteen years, many studies have proven that taking care of themselves is actually one of the most important things caregivers can do for their loved ones.

The Fearless Caregiver Conference at Sea will leave the Port of Miami on January 3rd and visit Roatan, Honduras and Cozumel, Mexico returning on January 8th. Along with the education, support and caregiver training by licensed clinical social workers, there will be a whole lot of you-time, including massages, shows, and interactions with fellow caregivers.
