Pick Your Own Peaches

Aug. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Yellow peaches are here!  No need to wait for apple picking season. Take your little ones to one of these orchards and show them how peaches grow. Then let them pick their own juicy variety.

Battleview Orchards, Freehold has ripe Yellow Freestone Peaches and nectarines ready for the taking.  Just grab a bag and start picking.  The season will last through next week. (Peaches and Nectarines are $1.25 per pound.)

Eastmont Orchards, Colts Neck has several varieties of Yellow Peaches as well — Jersey Glo, Jersey Queen and Encore that are currently ripening, but should be ready for picking soon.

When you’re out looking for the perfect peach, choose the fruit with golden undertones that are slightly soft to the touch.  (No need to squeeze the peaches too hard.) And as for  nectarines, they should be a deep, dark red/orange. The more red, the sweeter and softer it is likely to be.  

Always call ahead because picking times and supply are subject to change! (Eastmont takes cash or checks only, and neither orchard allows pets.)
