Iron ores are the rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be extracted economically. These ores are usually rich in iron oxides and are found in different colors. The three main sources of iron ore are Banded Iron Formations which are sedimentary rocks composed of thinly bedded iron minerals and silica, magnetite ore deposits, and hematite iron ore deposits which are exploited more in South America, Australia and Asia. Taconite is a silica-rich iron ore that is considered to be a low-grade deposit that can be processed to produce good quantities of iron. These iron ores ideally consist of oxygen and iron. They may also contain other host of elements like sulphur, phosphorus, aluminum etc. To convert it to metallic iron it must be smelted to remove the oxygen and other unwanted elements.
