| Keeping seniors mobile: improving gait via computerized cognitive trainingA recent randomized clinical trial published in the Journal of Gerontology shows how CogniFit computerized cognitive training delivers positive effects on gait in sedentary seniors.
By: Duncan Ferguson, Co-Founder Elite Minds Attention and executive functions show strong associations with slow gait and falls in seniors and have been shown to be amenable to cognitive remediation. However, cognitive remediation as a strategy to improve mobility had not previously been investigated. Using a randomized single-blind control design, 24 sedentary older adults were randomly assigned to an 8-week computerized cognitive remediation program or wait-list. The discussion section of the article states "The findings of this pilot randomized clinical trial show that a computerized cognitive remediation program improved gait in sedentary seniors. The ready adoption of this form of cognitive remediation by frail seniors who were mostly computer novices was encouraging. Our experience supports the feasibility of computerized remediation approaches in seniors." The findings of this pilot trial are promising and suggest that cognitive remediation may improve mobility in sedentary seniors, and in turn address one of the key concerns that elderly citizens face - falling.
