Follow on Google News | A One Man Garage Goes NationalRocky Mounts, Inc., based out of Boulder, CO is quickly spreading across the states. What started as a one man operation has gained an impressive following and is becoming a core player on the national scene.
By: Nicole Kelly Rocky Mounts, Inc. started in 1993 when founder Bobby Noyes ventured from New Jersey to Boulder, CO in a mere passion for bikes. “I wanted to go to a place where bikes are as important as cars”, says Noyes. The first line of racks were designed and engineered by hand and sold from the back of his car. What became a huge hit in the local community resulted in greater development and initiated room for growth. Seventeen years later, still independently owned by Noyes, Rocky Mounts is climbing to the top of the industry and positioning themselves next to the big names Thule and Yakima. What sets them apart is their sleek, low profile, aerodynamic design, not to mention the option to choose from nine different colors. Their dual locking system and disc brake adapter phenomenon are also a big hit. Rocky Mounts are made from cast and extruded aluminum; a corrosion resistant steal hardware that boasts a better quality bike rack. The latest lineup includes the Pitchfork (fits all Yakima and Thule crossbars), The Euro Pitchfork (fits all European made crossbars and Thule rapid aero bars), and the Tierod- the most innovative rooftop mount out there (fits all factory crossbars). Despite the dip in the bike industry just last year, Rocky Mounts dropped an entire new breed on the market in 2010. Even with gas prices up, auto sales down, and the march for a greener environment they managed to get ahead. “We do it because we love to ride bikes. Sometimes, you need the taste of an epic ride and the least we can do is get there”, says Noyes. Maybe ironic, but their passion pays off. REI, Back Country, and top store names alike are stocking their shelves. Even pro riders like Ben Day and Davis Phinney are stopping by to get their rides “pimped”. CarShare Vermont, Hudz Subaru, Boulder Cup, and U.S. Military Cycling are also digging Rocky Mounts. Phone calls and emails are streaming with sponsorship requests, partnership opportunities, and customer reviews. Steve from Greenville, NC says, “You guys definitely have a grasp on what the real biker is looking for!” As far as Boulder goes, Rocky Mounts are the number one sold bike rack in town. The backbone of this, once one man, operation comes from a total of seven local employees in pursuit of producing original products, down to earth service, and spreading the good word. They assemble, box, and ship straight from the Boulder Showroom; a true homegrown style affair. Rocky Mounts also opened the doors to new marketing plans. They recently designed and launched a completely new logo, a brand new style guide, a new sign for the local showroom, and the website got a makeover. This fall Rocky Mounts is heading to Vegas and setting up shop at Interbike, the largest bike industry trade show event in the states. During the show they plan to highlight five new products that will be available in 2011 plus showcase their 2010 release. This debut is expected to strike a big impact on their 2011 sales. Rocky Mounts is stepping foot into a booming future. They continuously raise the bar for bike rack systems and every year they bring more to the shelves. While keeping the local homegrown vibe alive, their introduction on a fresh new era of goods is taking off. “We’ # # # Rocky Mounts, Inc. is a leader in designed and engineered car rack systems.
