Aug. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- San Diego, CA, August 12, 2010 -- Acclaimed judge of the Art of Photography Show, Natasha Egan, the Associate Director and Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, selected nine series to be featured in the exhibition. These cohesive bodies of work will be represented in this major exhibition, which features the top 111 images chosen out of 14,000 entries from 67 countries. It is expected that the show will be viewed by over 30,000 people from August 28 to November 7, 2010.

“Serving as the sole juror for the Art of Photography Show was both an immense pleasure and a daunting experience.” said Ms. Egan. “The works submitted astonished me with their range in photographic style, technique, subject matter, and ideas, and the photographs chosen for this exhibition reveal this diversity.”

Cynthia Bittenfield is among the photographers that will feature a series in the exhibition. Her series "Rowing for Shore with Sinking Ships All Around" puts a human face on the subject of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the difficulties so many US soldiers face readjusting to civilian life after returning home from a combat zone. “Rowing for Shore with Sinking Ships All Around” tells the story of Sergeant Jacob B who joined the army at age 18, was honorably discharged, then later was reactivated and deployed to Iraq. Two weeks before he was scheduled to return home, two of his best friends were killed when a roadside bomb exploded. He suffered from PTSD. After failing to receive adequate care and treatment, Jacob committed suicide at the age of 26. To view Bittenfield’s images which will be exhibited in the Show, please visit www.artofphotographyshow.com/2010_series.html.

Bittenfield’s work has been exhibited in numerous venues, namely the School of Visual Arts Gallery and Broadway Gallery, both in New York City, The Print Center in Philadelphia and in the upcoming show Photography NOW 2010 at The Center for Photography at Woodstock. Bittenfield is a grant recipient from the School of Visual Arts, New York, where she received her MFA in Photography, Video and Related Media. She lives in New York City.

Another featured photographer is Tomoe Murakami for his series “Approach to Invisible”. Murakami wrote: “I want to see what is ‘further on,’ what is ‘ahead’ – hidden and invisible. But when I approach there, it disappears like a mirage. For, the moment I arrived there, that ‘ahead’ was no longer ‘ahead.’ Further, I keep looking for what is farther on, looking for what, I think, I am able to see someday.” To view Murakami’s images which will be exhibited in the Show, please visit www.artofphotographyshow.com/2010_series.html.

Murakami was born in Chiba, Japan in 1980 and received a BA in Art and Literature from Waseda University in 2004. Currently, he is a research associate at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Photography Center and resides in Tokyo.

Other photographers with series in the exhibition include: Francesca Bontempi, Marcus Buck, Maury Gortemiller, Jukka Male, Kirk McKoy, Chris Sisarich, and Michael Ten Pas.

The Art of Photography Show is an international competition and exhibition of photographic art based in San Diego. Entries for this year’s competition came from 67 countries with at total of 25 countries being represented in the ten week exhibition. The Opening Reception Gala is scheduled for Saturday, August 28 from 6pm to 10pm. An estimated 1,500 people from all over the world will be in attendance, including most of the exhibiting artists. A total of $10,000 in cash awards will be presented that night to the top 15 artists chosen by Ms. Egan.

The fact that the Art of Photography Show is judged by a major museum curator each year is what differentiates the competition from other competitions. Photographers rarely have the opportunity to reach these respected and influential people, which is why the show receives so many entries from world-renowned photographers.
