July 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Barcelona is a city filled with history, tradition and culture and has many great monuments and buildings worth seeing during the warm summer months. Although you may not be able to fit them all in during your visit, there are some museums that should be at the top of your itinerary. This includes the Barcelona Museum of History (known as MUHBA) which is quite often overlooked by visitors in favour of more renowned sights. The fact of the matter is, if you want to get the low down on the history of Barcelona, stretching back 2,000 years or so, the Barcelona Museum of History is where you should be going!
Also if you are planning to come to the city, I recommend you to book online accommodation in Barcelona at http://www.barcelonapoint.com.

The museum is actually a collection of some of the historical buildings and centres of significant cultural importance in the city such as the Monastery of Pedralbes, the Saint Catherine Area (complete with an archaeological centre) and the Monumental Plaza del Rey. As well as this, the main bit that visitors will see is the two level building on the Placa del Rei in the heart of the city. Whilst the upper levels are filled with displays relating to Barcelona from Roman times right through to the 19th century, as well as some interesting temporary exhibitions throughout the year, it is the lower levels of the museum that are the main feature.

Discovered in the underbelly of Barcelona in the early 20th century were many intact ruins and clearly identifiable parts of the old Roman city of Barcelona, namely Barcino. The decision was made at this time to preserve the old city and to conduct more excavations throughout the lower levels of Barcelona to uncover more and more of Barcino. Visitors to the lower level of the museum will be able to see Barcino’s laundry, a winemaking establishment, a dyers yard, a fish market and clearly defined houses and streets.

The best thing about this MUHBA display is that you get to actually walk through the ruins on an elevated platform, allowing you and your group to get up close and personal. Many people with children, those who love history or those who just want to get a different view on old Barcelona will love visiting this part of the museum in particular. Although it should be visited on sunny days (perhaps to get out of the heat and into the cool underbelly of the city), it is also a great option for a rainy day in Barcelona as it takes several hours to tour around the whole of the museum.

The Barcelona Museum of History is open all year round and offers free admission every Sunday between the hours of 3pm and 8pm. The cost of entry to the museum at other times is around 7 Euros, of which the cost of an excellent audio guide is included. It is highly recommended that you take the options of the audio guide to help you understand the museum even better than you would just visually.
