New York Passes Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights

New York is the first state to pass the Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights.

July 29, 2010 - PRLog -- The first state to pass the Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights has been New York. The state’s Senate passed the legislation with a vote of 32-28. The bill serves to offer basic labor protections to domestic workers, and contains rules regarding the administration of paid holidays and vacations as well as other labor standards such as overtime. It also mentions in detail employer as well as employee responsibilities.

Domestic workers consist of privately employed caregivers for the elderly, housekeepers and nannies, all of whom till now weren’t offered any federal protection. With these domestic workers known to silently face workplace abuse and exploitation, this legislation could immensely benefit those estimated 200,000 domestic workers in New York.

Interestingly, the New York Senate and the Assembly had passed a similar legislation back in June 2009. The old and the new versions are now set to be combined in an effort to make the Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights a landmark success. New York leads the way!
