Destin/Fort Walton Beach Businesses Use
Barter Dollars to Lure Visitors Back to Beach

While Florida tourism agencies are running ads in outlying areas to lure visitors back to the beaches, local condo and restaurant businesses are stocking up on their barter dollars. Unlike the tourism agencies, these businesses plan to use their barter dollars to purchase advertising for next season without digging cash from their pockets.

For example, when using barter, a condo management company hires a carpet cleaner and issues restaurant coupons as a means to bring in more customers.  The restaurant then calls for an air conditioning repair estimate and places advertising in newspapers and on billboards.  This is all done without a single party involved having to spend any cash out-of-pocket.

“Our goal when we signed up to barter was advertising,” said Ryan Olin, owner of Henderson Park Inn (located at 2700 Scenic Hwy 98).  Olin uses barter to his company’s advantage by filling vacant rooms on barter in order to accumulate barter dollars to use towards advertising.

“We are bartering for any kind of service; floor maintenance, restaurants both for business as well as employee incentives and customer promotion,” said resort owner Charles Corsentino. Beacon Resorts, owned by Charles and Cindy Corsentino of Fort Walton Beach, is a regular client of barter. He also said that condo rentals are down and deep-sea fishing on the charter boat Scamp has been suspended because the boat has been hired by B.P.  He barters with the local ChemDry franchisee for rug cleaning and gives customer incentives for meals at local restaurants.

“Whatever we can barter for, we do.  Our cash flow is stressed so it is a welcome relief to get some of the services we may not have been able to afford because of the business climate,” Corsentino said.

“Money is tight,” said Jeff Moyer, owner of Godfather’s Pizza (located at 99 Eglin Parkway, Fort Walton Beach).  “Barter is like a savings account at wholesale rates.”  Moyer uses barter for advertising in community and military publications and has recently has his store windows tinted on barter.

Local business owners work with each other to insure their economic survival and barter is the common denominator that brings these businesses together. For instance, Business owner Donna Vongsunora, consolidated six Thai restaurants in the area into Dad’s Barbeque (located at 140 West Miracle Strip Parkway, Mary Ester, FL) and now serves a combination of barbeque and Asian dishes.

“It’s businesses helping businesses,” she said.  “You turn to The Barter Company network to get things done.”

“It’s people helping people and business helping business to keep everyone afloat,” said Dominic Mogavero, a Barter Company client and representative.  “It brings businesses together.  This is a time to rally together.  If I’m running a restaurant, there’s still a cost for advertising, air conditioning, etc.  Right now you have to pay cash, but with barter, the businesses can share their services with each other to keep each other afloat.”

All of the aforementioned businesses are members of The Barter Company, with offices in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina.  Their client base includes everything from lawyers and dentists to restaurants, house painters and auto repair.

Ric Zampatti, CEO of The Barter Company, explains that businesses know the benefits of bartering in good times and in bad.

“Bartering for goods and services can help many companies conserve cash flow, which is a useful strategy during this credit crunch,” said Zampatti.  “The Barter Company works to bring in new sales and increased market share, reduce inventory and minimize cash outlay for everyday business expenses. We provide businesses with an alternate distribution network by using barter dollars instead of cash to handle transactions.  Businesses charge retail value for goods and services in barter dollars instead of selling them for reduced cash rates or having them go unsold.  In addition, The Barter Company acts as a third-party records keeper, providing clients with monthly statements that reflect all barter purchases, sales and current barter dollar balance.”
