From the demands of Carnoustie the greatest players in senior golf now move back across the Atlantic and the other side of the USA to the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington State for the US Senior Open.

In the ideal world an event of this status, the most significant in Senior golf, should not be as rushed as it is coming so soon after the third champion tour major of the year on the schedule. Preferably it would have an event Stateside immediately before but it has been this way for several seasons now.

Sahalee is an original Ted Robinson but Rees Jones redesigned layout being used for the first occasion for this event but a venue that played host to the 1998 PGA Championship won by Vijay Singh and the 2002 NEC WGC event won by Craig Parry.

Defending champion Fred Funk played well last week in Scotland when he tied for third and has a little bit of history on this golf course when finishing joint runner up to Parry in 2002. He probably deserves favouritism on that basis alone. Funk was also runner up in this event 2008.

The normal suspects, Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer, Nick Price, Tom Lehman, Loren Roberts and Corey Pavin must all be considered good chances to extend their already solid seasons in 2010. Dan Forsman, while not in the same league as then others in his regular tour career, has taken to the Champions Tour like a duck to water and has put himself in contention in nearly every event he has played this season.

Peter Senior put together a brilliant final round of 68 last Sunday to jump into third position at the Senior British Open and with Parry winning in 2002 and Allenby joint runner up with Funk perhaps it is a golf course that suits Australians. He has a good chance even without that history and if he can get his putter to behave then he has a chance of breaking through for his first Champions Tour victory.

Only one other Australian has a start, namely the 1997 champion Graham Marsh.
