Molloy Urges Florida Legislature To End Business As Usual & Cut State Budget

Dan Molloy, Republican candidate for the Florida Legislature (District 57), has called on Tallahassee lawmakers to stop increasing the state's budget, particularly in today's economic environment, and be more consistent with private sector economics.

July 26, 2010 - PRLog -- (TAMPA, FL) -- Republican candidate for the Florida Legislature, District 57, Dan Molloy is urging Florida lawmakers to end their habit of increasing spending and government employment in these difficult economic times and begin to trim the state budget, just as most Floridians, businesses, and organizations have been forced to over the past few years.

"As the owner of a small business related to construction and development, I've dealt with four years of budget cutbacks, to an overall forty percent reduction in expenses with half the staff, " said Molloy, the immediate past-president of the tri-county Tampa Bay Builders Association (TBBA) an organization that also has faced many economic challenges, "As an officer of the TBBA for the past four years, I have carried out budget and employment reductions of roughly 75% and as part of that process we had to re-define our organizational goals and priorities to meet the needs of our membership."

"However miserable the economy is in Florida, it is obviously business as usual in Tallahassee, where the unemployment rate is points lower than the rest of Florida," proclaimed Molloy.

Molloy says that for those in the business community, raising government fees during troubled economic times, and taking other budgetary actions that hurt the state economy, is unsupportable. "Equally unsupportable is the legislature's failure to trim state bureaucrat budgets and salaries to be more consistent with private sector employment and economics," remarked Molloy.

Dan Molloy is a real estate attorney, the vice president and founder of HomeAid Tampa Bay, and in addition to serving as president of the Tampa Bay Builders Association, has been a member of the Hillsborough County Consumer Protection Board, Hillsborough County's Transportation Task Force, the Parkway Center Community Development District, and the Avelar Creek Community Development District. He is a former assistant state attorney, assistant county attorney, and judicial assistant with the 2nd District Court of Appeal.

"Budget reductions cannot be done in a vacuum. Every decision, every expenditure, must be in accord with an overall plan of preserving our quality of life as Floridians and bringing our economy into the 21st Century," proclaimed Molloy, "It's a process of defining what the needs of our citizens are. There aren't any easy solutions, but Florida needs legislators with the experience and the will to rationally reduce state expenses."

"In 2011 and possibly future years, Florida will face unprecendented budget shortfalls as traditional sources of revenue fall short of Tallahassee's wish list," warned Molloy, " Meanwhile the 2010 state budget saw an increase of billions in state spending, and the state in 2010 employs more than ever before."

Molloy is a fifty year resident of the community, who lives and works in South Tampa with his wife Judy. He is a graduate of Chamberlain High School and the University of Florida Law School. He has four grown children; Billy, Katie, Danny, and JJ.

Molloy recognizes that making budget cutbacks in an organization or in government is more difficult than in a business, because no one can act unilaterally, since all decisions are joint decisions, with acceptance required by groups. "When it comes to eliminating or diminishing programs, every dollar has a constituency and a rationale for its necessary expenditure, but that's the part that Florida can't seem to get past in carrying out necessary cost cutting," Molloy concluded.
