Meditation Can Also be Harmful!

While countless studies have revealed the benefits of meditation, the fact that meditation can also be harmful is less well known. Kumara Mediation & Healing Centre explains why.

July 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Liz, Founder and Director of the Kumara Center, explains: “Meditation is used for various purposes however if the technique prescribed and taught does not fit you the main damage caused is in your relationship to yourself.”  The meditation in itself will not cause harm, however your confidence in meditation, your ability to pay attention to your internal life and eventually yourself will be damaged.  Even your belief that an unnatural technique is suitable for you will harm you.

An analogy would be wearing shoes that don’t fit.  Toes may become sore or toenails may even fall off.  Feet may develop blisters and may even get infected.  However if one forces themselves to wear the shoe with the belief that they will ‘break it in’, while this is possible, yet it is also very likely that they will trip, fall or injure their feet otherwise.

Historians observe that meditation has been developed and handed over by monks.  Most of these monks have lived in ashrams and monasteries.  Monks need to kill their sexuality and their attachments to anything except their robes and vows.  However as a member of society you do not need to nor are recommended to follow such steps.  Therefore blindly following the techniques practiced by monks will not bring you the desired results.

Kumara practices a balanced approach.  “The recent renovation our center is symbolic to its renovation of meditation techniques suitable for conventional people and times.”  The individual’s needs, interests and capabilities are understood before any particular practice or technique is prescribed.

After all, meditation is about quality, not quantity.
